We're Moving

Revue is shutting down, as might have been expected. What that means for the newsletter (Substack) and for you (mostly nothing changes).

We're Moving
Note: this essay was originally published on Revue on December 17, 2022.

Hey. I’m still on hiatus, but I wanted to drop a quick note to all of you.

You may well have missed it with everything else going on, but Twitter recently announced that they are going to be shutting down Revue, which is their newsletter app, and which happens to be where I chose to host my newsletter about a year or so ago.

This was not entirely unexpected given [gestures at the burning garbage fire that is Twitter]. In fact in the last newsletter I sent, I mentioned that I would probably be making a move, now that Elon Musk has turned Twitter into a place that can’t really be trusted to exist from moment to moment. He probably could have gotten away with just being a reactionary billionaire tech narcissist with fascist tendencies, since it’s sort of hard to find places to be on the internet that aren’t owned by reactionary billionaire tech narcissists with fascist tendencies … but the fact is that Musk in particular seems to be very interested in making Twitter into a place without stability, subject to the increasingly destructive whims of one extremely screwed-up person.

It’s an interesting tactic, making your site a place where nobody can trust the existing technology to go on existing and nobody could possibly trust any new offerings either. But then I’m not a super genius who has ideas like “what if traffic, but underground?”

So, the incentivization structure was already very strong to get off of Revue and all things Twitter. Now I’ll have to do it in three weeks, is all. And really as soon as possible, because I don’t trust Twitter to even hold to their January deadline.

Bottom line: I’m going to Substack. It’s not perfect but it strikes me as the most stable going concern. (I’ll also be transferring all of this eventually to my blog as a backup, but that’s a chore for another day.)

To all of you: I don’t think you should have to do anything. I’ll be porting everybody over soon, and we’ll just pick up at the end of the hiatus in mid January as planned, only from Substack now.

To my patrons: Expect another email from me about what this means for payments, sometime soon-ish, by which I mean as soon as I figure out what the hell this means for payments.

Thanks and I love you and see you out there.
